Smart bike trainers are amazing tools. Smart cycling apps are also amazing tools. The combination of these two revolutionized indoor training. Bike trainers feel so much better, they are much quieter and paired to a cycling app, they can simulate terrains, and you can practically ride and simulate any route or climb you wish. You can also use them to follow a structured workout which is how I mainly use mine.
Having a structured plan is very valuable. You are much more likely to do a workout when you have it scheduled on the calendar than not. It makes you more committed to your workouts and it will become more routine and consistent. And more importantly, it takes the guesswork out of training. A good training plan offers a long-term structured approach so you avoid overtraining and injuries and at the end, will make you a stronger cyclist.
Many cycling apps offer structured workouts but without a plan or a structure on how often, when, and which workout to do to get the best out of your time.
