Zwift Launches Apple TV Cycling App – What You Need To Know

After over six months of beta testing, Zwift, today, quietly released its much anticipated Apple TV app. The app is available to everyone in the Apple TV app store which you can download for free.

The app is compatible with Apple TV 4th generation and Apple TV 4K. However, it runs much smoother, with greater details on Apple TV4k. Apple TV 4k runs for $179 for the 32 GB or $199 for the 64GB version. A 32 GB is more than enough and will run Zwift very smoothly. I have been running the beta version on my Apple TV 4k for the past few weeks and been very happy with its performance.

BLUETOOTH ONLY

Before you go and purchase a new Apple TV, make sure your smart trainer and any device you intend to use are Bluetooth compatible. I would recommend a Bluetooth smart trainer at a minimum. I would say if you purchased your smart trainer in the past couple of years, then most likely it is Bluetooth compatible but make sure you check.

Apple TV limits the number of Bluetooth devices connected simultaneously. According to Apple:

Your Apple TV 4K or Apple TV (4th generation) can support several Bluetooth accessories simultaneously, up to this many:

One Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote*
One Bluetooth keyboard
Four MFi (Made for iOS) Bluetooth controllers (Unless you also connect a Bluetooth audio accessory. If so, you can connect only one MFi controller).

Basically, you can connect two additional devices if you only have the Apple TV remote connected. If you reach the limit, you can use the Zwift Mobile Link iPhone app to connect additional Bluetooth devices to your Apple TV.

If you smart trainer broadcasts power and cadence, this count as one connection.

If you need to connect ANT+ devices such as your powermeter, heart rate monitor of footpod, you can use an ANT+ bridge such as the 4iiii heart rate monitor ($80) or CABLE by North Pole Engineering ($60).
